[ rondo is a sword boy and a freak and therefore...of course he's awake early in the morning!!! he's out for a run, doing his own training routine, but when he spots kanda he slows to a stop.
it's from a fair distance - though not in any way subtle - and he keeps his mouth shut, but for a moment, rondo just stops and leans against one of the trees to catch his breath and just watch him work with his sword for a little while, studying his movements and his positions. almost subconsciously, when kanda does something really cool that he likes, he shifts where he's standing and adjusts his own position to mirror it, watching the way his arms move and slowly starting to practice the same movement. he doesn't take out his own sword, but mimes anyway. like this? is it like this...
wow... there really is a lot to learn from the people here. ]
[Normally he'd be doing this blindfolded, but he probably won't for a while, at least not without Lavi around. That means that, even if he doesn't look or acknowledge Rondo in any way, he's able to see him in his periphery. He doesn't seem to mind being watched, at least, since he's used to it and Rondo isn't distracting him.
Eventually:]
Stick with your own style. You'll cut your foot off.
anyway this is exactly what sazantos-san usually does which means he catches on IMMEDIATELY - he brightens and draws his sword! i can't remember if i linked it to you yet but behold.
[ this is exactly what he's used to out of a sparring match actually SO YEAH!!! HE DOES!!!
sazantos never gave him any quarter either. never any warning, never any words. never even any tacit agreement, besides the occasional "come." more like an eyebrow raise and then he was fighting for his life, because no spar was ever done at anything less than full strength.
which means when kanda comes for him, rondo's immediately ready. he parries the strike with speed, foot shifting in the dirt to adjust his stance and immediately meets him blow for blow! his talk about not dying in battle was perhaps not just talk after all.
since kanda is a sword guy, he will likely be able to tell that rondo's style is power forward opposed to dexterity - he hits hard, and moves with a lot of strength behind his swings, preferring to parry over a total dodge. he will also be able to tell that the sword rondo's using is maybe not his normal sword. the skill is there, but the shape of the blade he wields is different than his usual, so he has to compensate for it when he's swinging. ]
[For Kanda's part, it's a mixture of both. It's probably fairly easy to tell that he's stronger than a regular human, and his style is likely more agile than Rondo's purely on account of their different sword types. Despite that, it's clear he isn't big on dodging, either--not so much in the style of a tank, but rather, like someone used to powering through injuries from the hits that do land. Unlike Rondo, the sword is practically an extension of himself; there isn't an ounce of uncertainty or discomfort in the way he wields it, almost beyond what a nineteen-year-old should be capable of.
He'll go until Rondo wants to stop, and perhaps surprisingly, he doesn't really get grouchy or competitive over whatever hits might land on him--but Rondo might catch flashes of discontent here and there on his face, like he's not quite satisfied with his own performance.]
[ this absolutely reminds rondo of sparring with sazantos. the natural, fluid way kanda wields his blade is impressive, and rondo, clearly, is enjoying himself - he's focused, but occasionally his face lights up with a particularly impressive attack. it's not until he's starting to get a little tired, if only from wielding a blade that's not quite right for him that he finally pulls back and raises a hand to signal a break, taking a breath and wiping his mouth as he catches his breath.
strong, is his first, immediate thought, and he brightens as he leads. ] Wow, Mr. Kanda. [ genuine!!!! shiny!!!!! ] Thank you - thank you for the spar.
[ at least he never forgets his manners. usually. ]
I've never gotten to clash with a blade like that before, either...! You must have been training for a really long time, right? It's amazing!
[Every day I'm sad I didn't app yams or childe... instead I just have this stinky bitch
At least he's--well. It's hard to say if he's enjoying himself, because Kanda only ever smiles for terrible mean reasons, but he stays engaged and intense the whole time, so it's probably close enough. He also seems completely unfazed by the polite excitement Rondo exudes when they're done, as if this is something he's used to. Sometimes you're the equivalent of a pacrim pilot, if there were only like 6 jaegers and a million kaiju everywhere all the time and the whole thing was also secret.
He doesn't thank him back, but he does sit down to check over his sword briefly, and then takes his hair down to fix the bits that fell out of his ponytail. ONCE AGAIN, PROBABLY CLOSE ENOUGH.
At some point, the word faded from the back of his hand; at Rondo's comment, a picture of a lotus blooms in its place.]
Your sword. [Kanda please stop ignoring the things Rondo says for the love of god] You're not used to it.
[ i feel like yams and rondo can't be in the same room together their sheer energy might blow up an entire building. childe tho. imagine non stinky cr with childe. clenches fist.
ALAS i love this stinker. it's a good spar - rondo clearly enjoyed himself, and he has no problem saying so. not only that, but kanda's lack of response is, to him, signalling that it went well, too. this is how sazantos is, after all. no response is a good response. no nitpicks or bitchy comments is as good as a "that was fun", and he's glowing a little bit with exertion and pride as he goes to put his sword back in its sheath.
though, the comment has him pause. he looks up, notices the lotus, looks at kanda... ]
...mm. [ some of that exuberance fades, and he looks down at the strange hilt of the blade. ] It's ... this isn't my sword. It belongs to someone else.
[ its impossible to get stinky cr with lbx its true
anyway. he doesn't seem like he's going to say anything either, at least at first. ]
... Even if it's not mine, it's going to be. [ the sword. he exhales, a little more determined. ] So, I have to keep working with it. I have to keep practicing until I master it.
[It's not something Kanda can relate to--not when, in his world, your weapon chooses you and only you. When the only choice most accommodators get is which type of death you want: the hands of the enemy, or the punishment of God. He's used other swords before, but only in emergencies, and those weren't special or meaningful to anyone.
But he does know a thing or two about forced connections. He won't say that, of course, because why would he, but it is something he takes note of.]

Well, that'd be bad. But, it'd be good to be able to try new things, too, right...? If it fits.
[ a beat, and then he just blurts out - ]
Would you spar with me, Mr. Kanda?

He lowers his sword and finally looks over; he glances down at Rondo's sword, then looks back at him expectantly.
Is. Is that a yes or a no]
